Falcons Fall To Winston-Salem State In CIAA Baseball Doubleheader

ASHEBORO, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University dropped both games of a CIAA baseball doubleheader against Winston-Salem State University by scores of 11-0 and 17-3 at McCrary Park on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

The leading hitter for the Falcons in the first game was Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD), who was 3-for-3. He had three of the Falcons' five hits. Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) and Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) each added a hit.

The trio of Randy Norris, Lan Steiner and Ivan Acuna of Winston-Salem State each had two RBIs. The Rams finished with 11 hits.

The score was knotted at 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth. The Rams scored one run in the fourth and five runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the second game, the Falcons scored first for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Cheek scored Cameron Lopez (Fr./Vineland, NJ) on an RBI double.

The Rams scored in the first, second and third innings for a 12-1 lead. The Falcons scored a run in the fourth inning when Ricky Martin (Sr./Raleigh, NC) crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

The Rams (7-3 CIAA, 21-18 overall) scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons (7-7 CIAA, 12-29 overall) added a run in the fifth when William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA) scored Joshua Bumgardner (So./Durham, NC) on an RBI single. The Rams scored two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings for the final score.

Cheek and Thomas each knocked in a run for the Falcons, who finished with six hits. Norris had six RBIs for the Rams, who totaled 15 hits.

Both teams will play another doubleheader at the same site on Sunday, April 17. The starting times are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
