CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University will square off against Chowan University in the first round of the CIAA Baseball Championship at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 per day at the double-elimination tournament, which runs through Saturday, April 30.
The USA Baseball National Training Complex is located on 200 Brooks Park Lane. Concessions will be available for the duration of the tournament.
The Falcons are the No. 3 seed and Chowan (22-22 overall) is the No. 2 seed. The Saint Augustine's University-Chowan winner will play the Winston-Salem State University-Virginia State University winner on Friday, April 29, at 12 p.m. The Saint Augustine's University-Chowan loser will tangle against the Winston-Salem State-Virginia State loser on Thursday at 1 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the second game.
The Falcons (12-31 overall) are paced by hitters Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Will Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA), and pitchers Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) and junior Marquis Johnson (So./Richmond, VA). Cheek leads the Falcons in batting average (.338) and slugging percentage (.439) and Thomas is second on the team in slugging percentage (.438) and third in batting average (.315). Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) is tied for third in the CIAA in steals (15).
Brassington ranks third in the CIAA in earned run average (4.21). Johnson ranks fifth in the conference in earned run average (4.58) and tied for third in strikeouts (51). Brassington ranks fifth (7) and Johnson 12th nationally (6) in Division II in complete games pitched.
