Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University fell 16-0 to Winston-Salem State University and 12-2 to Chowan University on the second day of the CIAA Baseball Championship Tournament at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Friday, April 29, 2016.
The losses concluded the season for the third-seeded Falcons. The Chowan contest was the last in the collegiate careers of seniors Sean Brassington (Raleigh, NC), Carey Cheek (Baltimore, MD), Ricky Martin (Raleigh, NC) and William Thomas (Yorktown, VA).
The Falcons began the day facing five-time defending champion and top seed Winston-Salem State in the semifinal after beating Chowan 10-1 in Thursday's first-round contest. They threatened early against the Rams, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning. The Falcons, down 1-0 at the time, failed to score, however, and the Rams never looked back. The Rams scored in every inning but two to reach Saturday's championship round.
Martin led the Falcons on 2-for-4 hitting while Johnathan Sierra (Fr./Raleigh, NC) and Hector Pichardo (Fr./Dominican Republic) each added a hit. Michael McNamara paced the Rams with three RBIs.
The defeat sent the Falcons to the elimination bracket where second-seeded Chowan awaited them. The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and stretched the margin to 5-0 in the third inning.
The Falcons scored one run in the fifth inning when Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) scored Mikal Batts (Jr./Kinston, NC) on an RBI double. The Hawks built their lead to 12-1 before the Falcons scored the game's final run in the eighth inning. Batts smacked an RBI double to score Martin.
Batts finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored and Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) was 2-for-4 with a double for the Falcons. Marvin Harrell, Jr. drove in three runs for the Hawks.
