Carter Hits Grand Slam For Falcons In Baseball Split Against Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – A grand slam by Tim Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC) highlighted Saint Augustine's University's 17-6 victory over Chowan University in the first game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Hawkins Field on Sunday, April 3, 2015. The Falcons lost the second game 12-2.

The 17 runs are a season-high for the Falcons (4-3 CIAA, 9-25 overall), who are currently third in the CIAA standings. They can regain a share of the conference lead with a victory over the second-place Hawks (6-4 CIAA, 12-18 overall) on Monday, April 4, in Murfreesboro, N.C. The contest begins at 2:30 p.m.

The Falcons rebounded from Saturday's 9-8 loss to the Hawks with a resounding victory in the first game. They wasted no time, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning on Carter's grand slam home run which also scored Ricky Martin (Sr./Raleigh, NC), William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA) and Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL). The homer was the second in two games for Carter.

he visitors reeled off three more runs in the second inning. Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) scored on an RBI single by Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Johnathan Sierra (Fr./Raleigh, NC) scored when Cheek stole second base. Cheek scored on an RBI single by Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) for a 7-0 lead.

After the Hawks scored once in the second inning, the Falcons built a 10-1 lead with three runs in the third. Both Martin and Hector Pichardo (Fr./Dominican Republic) scored on bases-loaded walks and Mikal Batts (Jr./Kinston, NC) scored on Cheek's sacrifice fly.

he Falcons padded their margin with three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning. In the fifth, Pichardo scored when Sierra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Batts scored when Cheek popped up to the second baseman. Corey Brassington scored on a wild pitch.

In the sixth inning, Corey Brassington scored Thomas and Martin on a two-run double. Sierra also hit a two-RBI double to score Pichardo and Corey Brassington for a 17-1 lead. The Hawks scored three runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning for the final score.

Carter and Sierra each had four RBIs apiece as they combined for eight of the Falcons' 15 RBIs. Cheek and Corey Brassington each drove in three runs and Corey Brassington also scored three runs to tie Martin and Pichardo for team-high honors. Thomas and Batts each scored two runs for the Falcons, who produced eight hits. Connor Arcobasso had two RBIs for the Hawks, who totaled 12 hits.

Marquis Johnson (So./Richmond, VA) picked up his fourth pitching win of the season. He scattered nine hits, recorded seven strikeouts and allowed two earned runs in five and two-third innings.

he second game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Falcons plated two runs. Cheek scored on a wild pitch and Langston scored on Thomas' RBI double. The Hawks scored 12 runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

The Falcons can even the season series with a win on Monday. The contest will be the last in the four-game series between both teams.
