RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University will host Virginia State University in a key CIAA baseball series at Optimist Park on Saturday, April 9, and Sunday, April 10, 2016. A doubleheader is scheduled for both days beginning at 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The Falcons are third in the CIAA standings at 4-4 with eight conference games left in the regular season. The Trojans enter the four-game series fourth in the standings at 2-5. Chowan University leads the CIAA at 7-4 and Winston-Salem State University is second at 5-3. Lincoln (Pa.) University is fifth at 1-4.
Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) leads the Falcons offensively. The Falcons' left fielder ranks fifth in the CIAA in batting average (.333). He also ranks second in the league in steals (12). Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) is tied for third (11) in the CIAA in steals.
The Falcons (9-26 overall) boast one of the top pitching staffs in the conference. They rank second in the CIAA with a 4.56 earned run average.
Three Falcons rank among the top five in the CIAA in earned run average. Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) ranks third (3.55), Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) ranks fourth (3.75) and Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) ranks fifth (4.04). Johnson is tied for third (41) in the league in strikeouts and second in wins (4).
Virginia State (3-23 overall) is led on offense by Jamison Griffin and David Markins. Griffin ranks fourth in the CIAA in batting average (.341) and Markins is tied for third in home runs (3). The Trojans rank fourth in the CIAA in earned run average (8.26).
Four Falcons' seniors will be honored on Senior Day between the first and second games. The seniors are Sean Brassington, Cheek, Ricky Martin (Raleigh, NC) and William Thomas (Yorktown, VA).
