Falcons Split CIAA Baseball Doubleheader Against Virginia State On Senior Day

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) fired a five-hit complete game and Johnathan Sierra (Fr./Raleigh, NC) had two RBIs as Saint Augustine's University edged Virginia State University 4-3 in the first game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader on Senior Day at Optimist Park on Saturday, April 9, 2016. The Falcons lost the second game 7-2.

 

The Falcons evened their conference record at 5-5 with the split. They are third in the CIAA standings and Virginia State is fourth (3-6 CIAA). Both teams resume play Sunday, April 10, with a doubleheader scheduled at the same site. Game times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m.

 

Four seniors were honored between the first and second games. The foursome of Sean Brassington, Ricky Martin (Raleigh, NC), Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, PA) received framed action photos and were recognized for their career achievements.

 

Brassington celebrated Senior Day with a pitching victory in the first game. He struck out four, walked one and allowed two earned runs in seven full innings.

 

His teammates gave him offensive support. The Falcons scored two runs in the third inning and two more runs in the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit.

 

The Falcons tied the game in third inning when Sierra scored on Cheek's triple in the right center field gap. Darrell Langston (Jr./Chicago, IL) gave the Falcons the lead when his single scored Cheek. The lead stretched to 4-1 in the fourth inning when Sierra's two-run single scored Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) and Timothy Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC). The Trojans scored two runs in the fifth to close within 4-3, but the Falcons held on for the win.

 

Sierra finished 1-for-2 with one run scored in addition to a game-high two RBIs. Langston was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Carter was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Cheek was 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored.

 

Julian White was 2-for-2 with one run scored for the Trojans. Dylan Wells pitched seven complete innings in the loss.

 

The Falcons started strong in the second game. They led 2-0 in the first inning on Langston's single which scored Cameron Lopez (Fr./Vineland, NJ) and Martin's single which scored Langston.

 

The Trojans (4-24 overall) moved ahead 5-2 after scoring five runs in the third inning. They added two runs in the fifth inning for what turned out to be the final score.

 

Thomas was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple for the Falcons (10-27 overall), who had nine hits but left eight men on base. Lopez was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) took the loss despite scattering seven hits, striking out eight batters with no walks and giving up three earned runs in seven complete innings.

 

Jamison Griffin led the Trojans with two RBIs. Jordan Claytor pitched seven full innings to gain the win.
