RALEIGH, NC (Feb 12) – On Sunday, Saint Augustine's University erupted for three runs in the sixth inning for a 4-1 baseball victory over Claflin University in the first game of a doubleheader at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The Falcons lost 17-8 in the second game but took three of four games from the Panthers over the weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Falcons swept the Panthers 13-1 and 13-4 in Orangeburg, S.C. The Falcons are 4-6 overall and the Panthers are 1-7 after Sunday's games.

In the first game, the Falcons got key hits from Carson Davis (Fr./Oakboro, NC) and Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Davis singled in Johnathan Sierra (So./Raleigh, NC) and Pichardo smacked a double to score Charles Lyons (So./Rockingham, NC) and Davis.

Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithtown, NY) held the Panthers scoreless in one inning of relief to earn his second save of the season. He struck out the first two batters before loading the bases with three consecutive walks. The Falcons pitcher ended the contest in dramatic fashion when he struck out the next batter for the final out.

Starting pitcher Marquis Johnson (Sr./Richmond, VA) gained the win after allowing one hit and one earned run in six innings. He recorded six strikeouts and one walk. The Falcons tallied six hits including Pichardo's two-run double.

The Panthers led 1-0 in the fourth inning but the Falcons tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Falcons put three runs on the scoreboard.

In the second game, the Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Pichardo hit an RBI single to score Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) and Pinero added an RBI single to score Alexis Garcia (Sr./ Maracaibo, Venezuela). Davis hit an RBI single to score Pichardo.

The Panthers scored one run in the second but the Falcons still led 3-1. Their lead evaporated in the fourth as the Panthers scored six runs for a 7-3 lead. The Panthers added 10 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Still, the Falcons didn't quit as they scored five runs in the seventh. Lyons scored Keels on an RBI groundout and Brassington scored on a bases-loaded walk to Davis. The big hit in the inning was Collin Pippin's (Fr./Garner, NC) triple which scored Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY), Tre'Vohn Jeffrey (Fr./Raleigh, NC) and Davis.
