Box Score 2 Falcons Split Twinbill Against Tigers
RALEIGH, NC (Feb 19) – On Saturday, Feb. 18, Saint Augustine's University tallied 15 RBIs in a 17-9 romp over Benedict College in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Tiger Field in Columbia, S.C. The Falcons lost the first game 11-4.
The Falcons are 5-7 overall after splitting the doubleheader. They handed Benedict its first loss in four games.
Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) tallied five RBIs for the Falcons. Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) added four RBIs and four runs and Johnathan Sierra (So./Raleigh, NC) had three RBIs for the Falcons, who tallied 11 hits. Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) and Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY) each added three runs.
The Falcons scored six runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to erase a 2-0 deficit and open an eight-run lead. Jeffrey Guzman (Jr./Raleigh, NC) started the scoring for the Falcons with a solo home run in the third inning. Kilvio Garcia tied the score 2-2 when Johnathan Sierra (So./Raleigh, NC) was hit by a pitch, and Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) put the Falcons ahead on a two-run single which scored Keels and Brassington. Carter's RBI single scored Sierra, and Alexis Garcia scored on a wild pitch for a 6-2 lead.
Benedict closed within 6-4 with two runs in the bottom half of the third but the Falcons responded with a big inning in the fourth. Brassington collected a two-run single which scored Keels and Kilvio Garcia, and Carter hit a grand slam home run which scored Brassington, Sierra, Alexis Garcia and himself for a 12-4 lead.
After Benedict scored three runs in the fifth, the Falcons tacked on a run in the sixth when Brassington scored on a throwing error. The Tigers closed within 13-9 on two runs in the sixth but the Falcons added four insurance runs in the seventh. Keels scored Guzman on a single and Brassington hit a two-run double which scored Kilvio Garcia and Keels. The Falcons scored their last run on Sierra's sacrifice fly which scored Brassington.
Marquis Johnson (Sr./Richmond, VA) gained the win after tossing a five-hitter in 4.1 innings. Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithtown, NY) pitched in relief for the final 2.2 innings, allowing only one earned run.
Brassington batted 3-for-4 with a double and Carter batted 3-for-5 with a grand slam homer. Keels was 2-for-4 with an RBI. The trio of Armando Valentin, David White, Jr. and Skyler Sabado each had two RBIs for Benedict, who had five hits.
In the first game, the Falcons trailed 7-0 after the second inning. They scored two runs in the third on Brassington's two-run homer which scored Keels and himself and added two runs in the fourth on a fielding error which scored Alexis Garcia and Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic). After the Falcons closed within 7-4, the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added a run in the sixth for the final score.
Guzman recorded two RBIs and Keels was 2-for-4 with one run scored for the Falcons, who had four hits. Valentin finished with four RBIs and three runs scored on 3-for-4 hitting including two homers for the Tigers, who had 14 hits.
The Falcons visit the University of Mount Olive in a single game in Mount Olive, N.C. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The first pitch is 2 p.m.
