RALEIGH, NC (Feb 23) – On Wednesday, Feb. 22, Saint Augustine's University scored six runs in the first inning and went on to defeat neighboring school William Peace University 7-3 in a baseball game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) collected two RBIs, a double and one run scored on 2-for-4 hitting at the plate for the Falcons. Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) was 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored and Alexis Garcia (Sr./ Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored two runs. The Falcons (6-8 overall) totaled nine hits against the Pacers.
The Falcons opened a big lead early in the first inning. Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) doubled in Keels and later scored on an infield error. Tim Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) scored Johnathan Sierra (So./Raleigh, NC) on an RBI single and Pichardo smacked an RBI double to score Alexis Garcia. Carter scored on an RBI groundout by Carson Davis (So./Oakboro, NC) and Pichardo scored on an RBI groundout by Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY).
The score was 6-2 after the Pacers (5-6 overall) scored two runs in the sixth. The Falcons added a run in the eighth when Pichardo drove in Alexis Garcia on an RBI single for a 7-2 lead.
The Pacers scored one run and had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning. Collin Pippin (Fr./Garner, NC) entered the game as a reliever and recorded the strikeout for the final out to preserve the win for the Falcons. He earned his first save of the season in the victory.
Ali Nunn (Fr./Raleigh, NC) picked up the pitching victory for the Falcons. He allowed three hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings for a 2-0 record. The Pacers totaled seven hits in the game.
The Falcons will play again on Tuesday, Feb. 28 when they host the University of Mount Olive at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The first pitch is 2 p.m.
