CIAA Strikeout Leader Rickey Rice Gets The Win
 
RALEIGH, NC (April 17) – On Friday, April 14, Saint Augustine's University smacked four home runs and Rickey Rice (R-Sr./Union, SC) pitched seven strong innings in a 10-1 baseball win over Bluefield State College at Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy, N.C. The Falcons lost the second game 4-3.
Chris Zavala (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) paced the Falcons offensively in the first game. He had three RBIs and three runs scored on 3-for-4 hitting including two home runs for the Falcons, who totaled 15 hits in the contest.
Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) had two RBIs and two runs scored on 2-for-4 batting including a double and Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) drove in two runs and scored once on a home run. Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored and Ruben Pinero (R-Jr./Bronx, NY) was 2-for-4 with a homer, one RBI and two runs scored. Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) had two RBIs.
Rice allowed six hits in seven innings for his sixth pitching win this season. The CIAA strikeouts leader, Rice struck out six batters, walked one and had no earned runs.
The Falcons (17-26 overall) gave Rice an early working margin by taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Brassington doubled home Keels and Carter's two-run homer over the left field fence scored himself and Brassington for a 3-0 lead. Zavala added a solo homer over the center field fence and Garcia scored Pinero on a fielder's choice.
The Falcons padded their lead to 8-0 in the second inning. Brassington singled home Keels and Zavala hit his second homer – a two-run shot over the center field fence - to score himself and Brassington.
The Blues (11-22 overall) scored one run in the second inning but the Falcons added a run in the fifth off Pinero's homer over the left centerfield fence. The Falcons scored their final run in the seventh when Garcia scored Zavala on an RBI groundout.
In the second game, the Falcons spurted out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) scored Keels and Brassington on a two-run double and Pinero scored Zavala on a double. The Blues came back to tie the game in the same inning and led for good with one run in the fifth inning.
Both teams played another doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 in Princeton, W.Va. The site was Hunnicutt Field.
