CARY, NC (April 2) – On Sunday, Amilcar Yanez (So./Venezuela) and Rickey Rice (R-Sr./Union, SC) both pitched masterful games but Saint Augustine's University (SAU) fell to Chowan University 3-0 and 1-0 in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Both Yanez and Rice kept SAU close but the Falcons could not generate runs. They are now 3-3 in the CIAA and 14-21 overall while the Hawks upped their record to 5-3 in the conference and 14-19 overall.
In the first game, Yanez held the Hawks to five hits in seven complete innings. He had no earned runs, struck out five and walked one in the contest. Despite his performance, the Falcons lost as they totaled four hits. The Hawks scored two runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning for the win.
In the second game, Rice fired a three-hitter in seven complete innings. He fanned eight batters to extend his CIAA-leading strikeout total to 69, walked two batters and gave up one earned run. The Hawks scored the game's only run in the third inning.
Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) was 2-for-2 and Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) was 2-for-4 for the Falcons, who had six hits.
Both teams will play another doubleheader Monday, April 3 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Game times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3:30 p.m. and admission is free.
