Teams Will Play Doubleheader Saturday And Sunday In Ettrick, Va.
RALEIGH, NC (April 7) – On Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9, Saint Augustine's University will visit Virginia State University in a CIAA four-game baseball series at Whaley Colbert Field in Ettrick, Va. Game times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3:30 p.m.
The Falcons (14-23 overall) are third in the CIAA standings at 3-4. The Trojans (12-17 overall) are tied for fourth in the conference at 1-7.
Ricky Rice (R-Sr./Union, SC) heads a Falcons pitching staff ranked second in the CIAA in earned run average (5.04). A two-time CIAA Pitcher of the Week, Rice ranks first in the conference in strikeouts (69), second in earned run average (3.70) and tied for third in wins (4) while Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithtown, NY) is first in saves (3). Nationally, Rice ranks eighth in Division II in complete games (4), 16th in strikeouts and 21st in games started (9).
Offensively, Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) is the team's top hitter (.348) and the CIAA leader in stolen bases (27). Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) leads the CIAA in on base percentage (.497) and walks (42) in addition to ranking second in runs (33) and third in stolen bases (20). Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) is tied for first in home runs (6) and tied for third in RBIs (28).
Both Keels and Brassington are among the nation's leaders in several categories. Brassington is the Division II leader in walks and walks per game (1.14) and Keels is second in stolen bases and seventh in stolen bases per game (0.77) for the Falcons, who rank fifth in the country in stolen bases (75). Keels also ranks 20th in Division II in toughest to strike out.
The Trojans are led by David Markins, who leads the CIAA in batting average (.430) and runs batted in (37). He also is tied for first in home runs (6).
