Box Score 2 Falcons, Trojans Split First Of Two-Day CIAA Series
RALEIGH, NC (April 8) – Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) and Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY) each drove in two runs and Rickey Rice (R-Sr./Union, NC) fired a five-hitter as Saint Augustine's University thumped Virginia State University 8-1 in the second game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Whaley Colbert Field in Ettrick, Va. The victory avenged a 9-1 defeat in the first game.
The Falcons (15-24 overall) are third in the CIAA standings at 4-5. The Trojans (13-18 overall) are fourth in the conference at 2-8. Both teams meet Sunday, April 9 for another doubleheader at Whaley Colbert Field beginning at 1 p.m.
In the second game, the Falcons registered nine hits to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the first inning. They tied the score 1-1 in the third inning when Brassington scored Kilvio Garcia on an RBI single and gained a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Ruben Pinero (R-Jr./Bronx, NY) scored Chris Zavala (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) on an RBI groundout and Kilvio Garcia scored on an infield error.
The Falcons added two more runs in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Brassington stole home and Zavala scored Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) on an RBI double.
The lead stretched to 6-1 in the sixth when Brassington scored Pinero on a sacrifice fly. The Falcons finished off the Trojans with two runs in the seventh when Kilvio Garcia scored Zavala and Pinero on a two-run single.
Rice handled the Trojans through seven complete innings for his fifth victory of the season. He struck out nine batters and walked one to increase his league-leading strikeouts total to 78.
Brassington was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and one run scored and Kilvio Garcia was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Falcons. Zavala was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored and Carter was 2-for-2 with one run scored.
Pinero was 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Falcons. Sisqo Scott drove in the Trojans only run.
In the first game, Kilvio Garcia knocked in the Falcons only run. He scored Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) on an RBI groundout in the seventh inning. Kilvio Garcia was 1-for-3 with one RBI and Alexis Garcia was 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Falcons, who had six hits.
Colton Gunn sparked the Trojans with five RBIs and one run scored on 3-for-4 hitting. The Trojans had 10 hits in the first game.
