RALEIGH, NC (April 9) – On Sunday, Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithtown, NY) and Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) combined on a four-hitter as Saint Augustine's University downed Virginia State University 4-1 in the first game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Whaley Colbert Field in Ettrick, Va. The Falcons lost 7-1 in the second game.
The Falcons (16-25 overall) are third in the CIAA at 5-6. The Trojans (14-19 overall) are fourth in the conference at 3-9. Both teams split a doubleheader for the second straight day.
Ingram limited the Trojans to three hits and one earned run in four innings for the win. Pichardo earned the save after holding the Trojans to one hit in the final three innings.
The Falcons supported both pitchers with 12 hits. Carson Davis (Fr./Oakboro, NC) led the Falcons with a home run, a double, one RBI and one run scored on 2-for-3 batting. Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Chris Zavala (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) both batted 2-for-4 with one RBI each. Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) was 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored and Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alexis Garcia scored Brassington on an RBI single. The score stretched to 2-0 in the third when Brassington scored on an infield error.
The Trojans cut the Falcons lead to 2-1 in the fourth on an RBI double by Julian White but the Falcons scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings for the final score. Zavala scored Carter on an RBI single in the fifth and Davis hit a solo home run in the sixth.
In the second game, the Falcons fell behind 4-0 before scoring their lone run in the fifth inning when Brassington scored Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY) on an RBI single. The Trojans scored three runs in the sixth for the final score.
Ruben Pinero (R-Jr./Bronx, NY) was 2-for-3 with a triple and Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) was 2-for-3 for the Falcons, who had seven hits. Sisqo Scott and Michael Liburd had two RBIs apiece for the Trojans, who totaled nine hits.
The Falcons will step out of conference this weekend against Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W.Va. in a four-game series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 starting at 1 p.m. both days.
