Hot Shooting Lifts SAU Men's Basketball Over Nationally-Ranked East Stroudsburg 77-65

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 10) – Saint Augustine's University opened its men's basketball season in impressive fashion with a 77-65 non-conference victory over nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg University at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Warriors (0-1 overall) entered the Shaw Basketball Classic ranked 15th in the NABC Coaches preseason poll, but the Falcons relied on sizzling shooting to put away their opponent. Guards Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) and Jquwan Ruffin (Jr./Ahoskie, NC) each scored 20 points as the Falcons shot 55.6 percent from the floor including 66.7 percent (10 of 15) behind the three-point arc.

Jalen Gaddy (Jr./Raleigh, NC) added 10 points while Miguel Brown (So./Wilson, NC) and D.J. Harrison (Sr./Winston-Salem, NC) chipped in eight points apiece. Brown pulled down nine rebounds and Craig McDaniel (Sr./Holly Springs, NC) dished out five assists.

The Falcons opened a 46-31 lead on Gaddy's layup early in the second half, but the Warriors, who reached the DII Elite Eight last season, whittled the margin to three at 57-54 with 8:24 left. The Falcons delivered the final blow with a 20-11 run to end any thoughts of a Warriors' comeback.

The first half was close until the midway point when the Falcons asserted themselves. Trailing 21-17, the Falcons pulled away for a 42-31 halftime lead. The Falcons scored the first two buckets of the second half before the Warriors rallied back, setting the stage for the Falcons' big run to close out the contest.

Nick Giordano scored 17 points and Josh Williams added 11 points for the Warriors, who won the DII Atlantic Regional title last season. The Warriors were held to 41.8 percent shooting from the floor.

The Falcons return to the court Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Shaw Classic. They take on Mansfield University in a 2 p.m. contest at Spaulding Gymnasium. Follow the action via live video and live stats on shawbears.com, theciaasn.com and saintaugfalcons.com.
