SAU Men's Basketball Falls To Nationally-Ranked Virginia State In Non-Conference Game

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 17) – Saint Augustine's University fell to nationally-ranked Virginia State University 70-51 in a non-conference men's basketball matchup between two CIAA schools at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

The loss was the first in three games for the Falcons (2-1 overall), who were seeking their second victory over a nationally-ranked team this season. The Trojans entered the contest ranked 25th in the D2SIDA National Media Poll while the Falcons received six votes in the same poll this week.


Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) collected 12 points and six rebounds for the Falcons, who led 18-14 early on a dunk by Aaron Johnson-Cash (Fr./San Francisco, CA). They fell behind 34-27 at halftime and were outscored 36-24 in the second half.


Jalen Gaddy (Jr./Raleigh, NC) and Dante Edwards (Fr./Durham, NC) each added nine points and Jquwan Ruffin (Jr./Ahoskie, NC) chipped in eight points for the Falcons, who outscored the Trojans 22-18 in bench points.


Cyonte Melvin scored 15 points and Cedric Wiggins added 13 points for the Trojans (2-2 overall), who outrebounded the Falcons 52-37 including a 21-8 advantage on the offensive glass. The Trojans outscored the Falcons 26-18 in the paint, 12-4 in second chance points and 10-2 in fastbreak points.


The Falcons shot 31.9 percent from the floor including 16.7 percent behind the three-point arc. The Trojans shot 37.5 percent including 32 percent behind the three-point line.


Both teams meet again in a conference game on Dec. 13. The starting time is 7:30 p.m. in Ettrick, Va.

On Monday, Nov. 19, the Falcons visit Claflin University in their CIAA opener in Orangeburg, S.C. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
