RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 13) – Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) scored a season-high 27 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 69-54 CIAA men's basketball defeat to Virginia State University at the VSU Multipurpose Center in Ettrick, Va., on Thursday.
Gathright added four rebounds and two steals for the Falcons. He shot 10 of 19 from the floor and a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line.
The Preseason All-CIAA guard kept the Falcons within reach of the Trojans much of the contest. He scored 13 points in the first half including a free throw that gave the Falcons their only lead at 27-26. The Falcons went into halftime down 28-27 after trailing by 12 in the first half.
He registered 14 points in the second half including a jumper to close the gap within 49-43 with 7:30 remaining. The Trojans finished the game on a 20-11 run for the victory.
Donte Edwards (Fr./Durham, NC) added eight points including 2 of 4 three-pointers for the Falcons. D.J. Harrison (Sr./Winston-Salem, NC) scored seven points on 3 of 3 shooting from the floor and 1 of 1 shooting from the free throw line.
Jahmere Howze and Cyonte Melvin each scored 13 points for the Trojans (1-0 CIAA, 6-3 overall). Brandon Holley contributed 11 points.
After a one-day break, the Falcons (0-3 CIAA, 2-7 overall) are back in action Saturday, Dec. 15, against Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
