SAU Men's Basketball Falls To Catawba

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 31) – Jquwan Ruffin (Jr./Ahoskie, NC) scored 11 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 75-53 loss to Catawba College in men's basketball at Emery Gymnasium on New Year's Eve (Monday).
 
Ruffin scored all 11 points in the second half. He was 3 of 4 behind the three-point arc.
 
Donte Edwards (Fr./Durham, NC) added nine points and Jalen Gaddy (Jr./Raleigh, NC) contributed eight points for the Falcons. Ishmael Baldwin (Sr./Kinston, NC) and Miguel Brown (So./Wilson, NC) both chipped in seven points.
 
Jameel Taylor scored 21 points and Marcell Haskett added 13 points for Catawba (9-2 overall), ranked seventh in the D2SIDA Southeast Region poll. Ben Zemonek scored nine points.
 
The Falcons (2-9 overall) fell behind early after leading scorer Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) picked up two quick fouls in the first half. The Indians built a 32-21 halftime lead, but Ruffin hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Falcons within 39-32 in the second half.
 
After a Catawba free throw, Mel'Quan James (Jr./Weldon, NC) buried a jumper to pull the Falcons within 40-34, but the Indians extended their lead to run away with the win.
 
The Falcons play again Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at home against Carolina Christian College. The contest begins at 5 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium.
