SAU Baseball Falls Twice In Doubleheader Against Benedict

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 19) – Saint Augustine's University dropped both games of a baseball doubleheader against Benedict College at Tiger Field in Columbia, S.C., on Monday. The scores were 6-0 in the first game and 8-7 in the second game.

The Falcons were coming off two victories against the Tigers in Cary, N.C., on Sunday, Feb. 18. Both teams split the season series 2-2 after Monday's games.

On Sunday, the Falcons rallied from a 3-0 deficit in both games. They did it again Monday when the Tigers build a 3-0 lead in the second game. The Falcons scored four runs in the third inning for a 4-3 lead but the Tigers added a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.

Another spurt by the Falcons in the fourth and fifth innings pushed them ahead 7-4. The Tigers overcame a three-run deficit with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth for the win.

Cody Harris (Jr./Lumberton, NC) drove in two runs and Stephon Hines (R-Fr./Coatesville, PA) scored twice for the Falcons, who are 6-3 overall. Deaunte Ford (Fr./Charlotte, NC) doubled and scored a run, and Ruben Pinero (R-Sr./Bronx, NY) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in addition to scoring a run. The Falcons finished with six hits while the Tigers (2-3 overall) had nine hits.

In the first game, the Falcons were limited to three hits in the loss, which snapped their five-game winning streak. The trio of Hector Pichardo (Jr./Dominican Republic), Nick Roets (Fr.) and Carson Davis (Jr./Oakboro, NC) each collected a hit with Davis getting a double. The Tigers tallied eight hits in the contest.

The next doubleheader for the Falcons is Thursday, Feb. 22, against West Liberty University in Cary, N.C. The first game starts at 1 p.m. and the second game begins at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
