SAU Baseball Falls Twice To Post In Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 25) – Strong pitching nearly helped Saint Augustine's University beat Post University in the first game of a baseball doubleheader, but the Falcons fell 3-2 in extra innings Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Falcons lost the second game 7-2.

The Post batters were no match for Amilcar Yanez (Jr./Valencia, Venezuela) as the Falcons' hurler fired a two-hitter through six innings before retiring for the day. Yanez was part of a Falcons' trio of pitchers, including Jeffrey Guzman (Sr./Raleigh, NC) and Hunter Davis (Fr.), who limited the Eagles to five hits. The threesome combined for nine strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

The game was scoreless until the ninth inning when Post managed a 3-0 lead on a two-run single and a passed ball. The Falcons nearly rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Jamal Keels (Jr./Manning, SC) scored on a throwing error and Hector Pichardo (Jr./Dominican Republic) stole home. The game-tying run was on first with two outs but the Eagles struck out the next batter for the win.

In the second game, Post scored four runs in the top of the first inning but the Falcons chipped away at the lead. Brandon Bly (R-Jr./New Castle, DE) and Carson Davis (Jr./Oakboro, NC) both scored on passed balls in the first and second innings, respectively, to get the Falcons within 4-2, but Post scored three runs in the third inning for a 7-2 lead which held up the rest of the game.

The Falcons are back on the field Thursday, March 1, against Wheeling Jesuit University at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park in Raleigh, N.C., for a nine-inning single game. The first pitch is 2 p.m.
