SAU Baseball Wins Close Contests To Sweep Bluefield State

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 9) – Saint Augustine's University pulled out two close games to top Bluefield State College 1-0 and 10-9 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., on Friday.

 

The Falcons improved to 4-1 overall after winning their second and third game in a row. This is the Falcons' best record after five games in recent memory.

 

In the first contest, Johnathan Sierra (Jr./Raleigh, NC) scored the eventual game-winning run on an infield error in the second inning. Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY) was credited with the RBI.

 

The Falcons earned the victory despite going hitless. Marquis Johnson (Sr./Richmond, VA) improved to 2-0 on the mound as he limited the Big Blues to two hits while recording five strikeouts in five innings. Jayvon Green-Springfield (Fr./Chester, PA) earned the save after pitching the final two innings.

 

In the second game, the Falcons opened an 8-1 lead in the fifth inning but the Big Blues came back to take the lead at 9-8 in the top of the seventh inning. The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom seventh to sweep the Big Blues. Carson Davis (Jr./Oakboro, NC) and Ruben Pinero (R-Sr./Bronx, NY) both scored on wild pitches to give the Falcons the win.

 

Hector Pichardo (Jr./Dominican Republic) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles for the Falcons, who had 10 hits. Sierra was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Pinero was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, one run and a double. Avery Rosania (Jr./Catonsville, MD) had a double, one RBI and two runs scored and Davis scored two runs. Garcia threw one and two-third innings to gain the pitching victory.

 

The Falcons are back in action Tuesday, Feb. 13, against the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C. The first pitch is 2 p.m. for the nine-inning game.
