SAU Baseball Outslugs New York Tech In D-II Challenge

CARY, N.C. (March 10) – Saint Augustine's University amassed a season-high 23 hits in a 15-10 baseball victory over New York Tech in the Vs. Cancer D-II Challenge at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Friday, March 9.

The hits are the most for the Falcons since last season. They tallied 22 hits in an 18-10 road win over Bluefield State College on April 15, 2017. Their previous high this season was 13 hits in a 6-2 home victory over the University of Virginia-Wise on Feb. 3.


Ruben Pinero (R-Sr./Bronx, NY) led the Falcons at the plate. He had a career-high five RBIs on 4-of-6 hitting including a double. Carson Davis (Jr./Oakboro, NC) was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored on three doubles and Johnathan Sierra (Jr./Raleigh, NC) went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jamal Keels (Jr./Manning, SC) and Hector Pichardo (Jr./Dominican Republic) both scored two runs for the Falcons (8-11 overall), and pitcher Jayvon Green-Springfield (Fr./Chester, PA) picked up his first win of the season.

The Falcons erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to open a 13-2 lead. The Bears (0-2-1 overall) scored the next three innings including four runs in the fifth to get within 13-10, but the Falcons tacked on one run each in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win.

SAU regrouped in the second game after dropping a 10-3 decision to The College of Saint Rose (6-5 overall) earlier in the day. The Falcons trailed the entire game after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. Saint Rose scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull away 10-2.

Alton Brown (So./Durham, NC) and Cody Harris (Jr./Lumberton, NC) each drove in a run for the Falcons. The trio of Harris, Stephon Hines (R-Fr./Coatesville, PA) and Avery Rosania (Jr./Catonsville, MD) each scored one run.

The Falcons hit the road Saturday, March 10, to visit Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., for a doubleheader. The first pitch is 1 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field.
