Big Innings Key SAU Baseball Past Bluefield State In Second Game Of Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. (March 18) – Saint Augustine's University bounced back to defeat Bluefield State College 12-6 in the second game after falling 4-3 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader on Senior Day at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Saturday, March 17.

The Falcons scored six runs in the first inning and five runs in the fourth inning to handle the Big Blues. Carson Davis (Jr./Oakboro, NC) batted 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, and Johnathan Sierra (Jr./Raleigh, NC) drove in three runs to lead the Falcons.


Ruben Pinero (R-Sr./Bronx, NY), one of three Falcons recognized on Senior Day, was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Nick Roets (Fr./Charlotte, NC) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Stephon Hines (Fr./Coatesville, PA) hit a two-run homer. Derrick Rabb, Jr. (Fr./Charlotte, NC) and Brandon Bly (R-Jr./New Castle, DE) each scored two runs.

Sparked by Hines' homer and Davis' two-run single, the Falcons jumped out to a 6-1 first-inning lead. The Big Blues (6-8 overall) closed within 6-3 in the third inning, but the Falcons (10-15 overall) opened an 11-3 lead in the fourth keyed by Pinero's two-run single.

Jayvon Green-Springfield (Fr./Chester, PA) gained the win after scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs in four innings. Hunter Davis (Fr./Charlotte, NC) and Avery Rosania (Jr./Catonsville, MD) finished off the Big Blues in the last three innings.

Before the start of the second game, Pinero, a first baseman, along with pitcher Marquis Johnson (Richmond, VA) and utility player Hector Pichardo (Dominican Republic), were honored on Senior Day. Each student-athlete received a framed photo during the ceremony.

In the first game, the Falcons held a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning, but a two-run homer put the Big Blues ahead. The homer turned out to be the game-winning hit.

Jamal Keels (Fr./Manning, SC) was 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored, and Hines was 1-for-2 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Roets and Pinero each drove in a run and Cody Harris (Jr./Lumberton, NC) scored a run for the Falcons.

The Falcons will take a 10-day break before returning to the USA Baseball National Training Complex on March 27 against William Peace University. The nine-inning game begins at 6 p.m.
