SAU Men's Basketball Falls To Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 8) – Rashad George (R-So./Raleigh, NC) scored a career-high 21 points and Tyre Gathright (Sr./Wilmington, NC) added 20 points for Saint Augustine's University in an 88-78 CIAA men's basketball loss to Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium on Thursday night, Feb. 7.

Craig McDaniel (Sr./Raleigh, NC) collected 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Falcons, who shot 58.6 percent in the second half to cut a 17-point halftime deficit to five at the 12:51 mark. The Golden Bulls' lead reached double digits again later in the second half.

Hirk Williams (Jr./Manassas, VA) scored eight points and D.J. Harrison (Sr./Winston-Salem, NC) registered seven points for the Falcons. Donte Edwards (Fr./Durham, NC) finished with six points, six rebounds and five assists.

Roddric Ross led five double-figure scorers with 19 points for the Golden Bulls. Nenad Milenkovic added 15 points and Cayse Minor contributed 12 points. Justice Goodloe and Michael Robertson each chipped in 10 points.

The Falcons shot 52.8 percent from the floor including 41.7 percent from three-point range. They outscored the Golden Bulls 32-26 in the paint and outrebounded the hosts 32-25. For the second consecutive game, the Falcons scored 52 points in the second half, which is the second-highest total this season.

The Golden Bulls shot 50 percent for the game including 53.6 percent in the first half when they opened a 43-26 halftime lead. They finished the contest outscoring the Falcons 31-15 in points off turnovers and 35-11 in bench points. JCSU shot 48.3 percent behind the three-point arc.

George, who had five assists and four rebounds, scored 12 points in the first half including 10 in the first five minutes to give the Falcons a 14-5 lead. The Golden Bulls (3-4 Southern Division, 7-13 overall) outscored the Falcons 38-12 the rest of the half to open a 17-point halftime lead.

The season series is tied 1-1 this year. The Falcons won the first matchup 76-62 in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 23. The second contest was originally set for Feb. 13 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Falcons (2-6 Southern Division, 7-15 overall) play their fourth road game in eight days against Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 9. Game time is 4 p.m.
