ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (March 27) – Haley Sessoms (Jr./Kenansville, NC) stood out for Saint Augustine's University in softball doubleheader losses to Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday.
Sessoms provided the offensive spark for the Lady Falcons, who lost 5-2 in Game 1 and 17-9 in Game 2. The junior infielder was 7 of 8 at the plate with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored in both games combined at South Park Sports Complex. She posted an .875 batting average and 1.125 slugging percentage in the non-conference twinbill against their CIAA opponent.
In the first game, Sessoms scored the only two runs for the Lady Falcons on 3 of 4 hitting. Kayla Jordan (Fr./Charlotte, NC) drove in Sessoms twice for the Lady Falcons, who tallied five hits.
Makayla August (Jr./Palm Springs, GA) of SAU took the pitching loss despite hurling a three-hitter, striking out eight and recording no earned runs in six innings. Four errors hurt the Lady Falcons in the contest. Sara Phillips of ECSU recorded eight strikeouts and gave up two earned runs in seven innings for the win.
In the second game, Sessoms batted a perfect 4 of 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. August was 3 of 4 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Celine Jones (So./Grand Bahama, Bahamas) was 2 of 3 with one RBI and one run scored. Noel McNeil (Fr./Temple Hills, MD) scored two runs and had one RBI for the Lady Falcons, who had 13 hits.
Sessoms hit a two-run single to cap a five-run fifth inning rally, which brought the Lady Falcons within 11-9. The Vikings (5-13 overall) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the sixth to end the contest on the eight-run mercy rule.
D'Asya Wilson batted 3 of 5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored for ECSU, who totaled 13 hits. Stephanie Komives was 3 of 5 with two RBIs and four runs scored.
August recorded seven strikeouts and only five earned runs in 5.1 innings in the pitching defeat. The Lady Falcons were undone by eight errors. Winning pitcher Shea Vaccaro finished with five strikeouts and seven earned runs in 4.2 innings.
The Lady Falcons (1-9 overall) begin CIAA Southern Division play this weekend against Johnson C. Smith University and Livingstone College in doubleheaders at Lions Park in Raleigh, N.C. They host JCSU on Saturday, March 30, and Livingstone on Sunday, March 31, with both twinbills starting at 12 p.m.
