RALEIGH, N.C. (April 16) – Saint Augustine's University collected two big softball wins from Shaw University on Tuesday at Lions Park to remain in the hunt for a CIAA Championship Tournament bid.
The Lady Falcons edged the Lady Bears 3-1 in the first game behind a one-hitter from Makayla August (Jr./Palm Springs, CA), who was the winning pitcher in a 6-5 triumph in the second game. Tatyana Hall (Fr./Greensboro, NC) lifted the Lady Falcons to victory in the second game with a one-out walk-off double, which scored August.
In the CIAA standings, the Lady Falcons are currently fourth in the Southern Division (2-4), ahead of Shaw (2-6), Fayetteville State University (0-6) and Livingstone College (0-6). Eight teams – the top four in the Northern and Southern Divisions – advance to the CIAA Championship Tournament, which is April 29 through May 1 in Salem, Va.
The Lady Falcons have doubleheaders remaining against division foes Livingstone College (April 16), Fayetteville State (April 22) and Winston-Salem State (April 26). The wins against Shaw boosted the Lady Falcons' chances of postseason play.
August, SAU's All-American junior, played a huge role in beating Shaw. She stymied the Lady Bears in the first game, striking out seven and walking one in seven complete innings for her one-hitter. At the plate, August was 2-for-3 with one RBI, which was a double that gave the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Falcons increased the score to 2-0 in the second inning on a single by Briana Person (Fr./Jarratt, VA). The Lady Bears closed within 2-1 in the fifth, but Haley Sessoms (Jr./Kenansville, NC) gave SAU the cushion it needed when she scored on a passed ball in the same inning. The run capped a productive offensive game for Sessoms, who was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
SAU finished with seven hits against Joan Wendt of Shaw, who was the losing pitcher in game one.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons rallied from a four-run deficit after falling behind early. The Lady Bears opened a 5-1 lead, but SAU tied the score with four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run triple to right field from Gia Minnis (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas). Sessoms and Kayla Jordan (Fr./Charlotte, NC) both smacked RBI singles in the same inning.
In the seventh inning, August set up the final run with a double to center field. Hall, the next batter, drove August home with a double to left field. The double was the second in the game for Hall, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who pounded out nine hits.
August scattered eight hits in seven complete innings for her second pitching win of the day. She struck out four, walked two and allowed one earned run. Wendt took her second consecutive pitching loss.
The Lady Falcons are back at Lions Park on Thursday, April 18, against Livingstone with the first game beginning at 12 p.m. The team will honor Sessoms, who is graduating in May, on Senior Day.
