SAU Men's Basketball Falls To Bowie State On The Road

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 20) – Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) scored 16 points and Nilous Hodge (So./Charlotte, NC) and Aaron Johnson-Cash (So./San Francisco, CA) both recorded double-doubles as Saint Augustine's University battled back from a big deficit but fell late in a 64-59 CIAA men's basketball loss to Bowie State University at Jordan Arena in Bowie, Md., on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Hodge had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Johnson-Cash tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons, who trailed by 16 points in the first half but led three times in the second half, the final time on a three-pointer by Hodge for a 46-44 lead.

The Bulldogs retook the lead but the Falcons stayed within striking distance. A short jumper by Johnson-Cash pulled SAU within 53-52 with 3:36 left, but the Bulldogs nailed a deep three-pointer for a four-point lead, then made 8 of 12 free throws to hold off the Falcons.

Led by the trio of Gaddy, Hodge and Johnson-Cash, the Falcons outscored the Bulldogs 47-28 in bench points. This is the first time in recent years that two SAU players posted double-doubles in points and rebounds in the same game.

But Bowie State (4-3 CIAA, 12-8 overall) held a huge advantage at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs made 25 of 40 free throws compared to 5 of 9 for the Falcons. Bowie State also won the rebounding battle 51-38.

Cameron Hayes led four double-figure scorers with 15 points for Bowie State (4-3 CIAA, 12-8 overall). David Belle added 13 points.

The Falcons (0-6 CIAA, 5-11 overall) hit the road for the third consecutive game on Wednesday, Jan. 22. They square off against Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., in New Trent Gymnasium starting at 7:30 p.m.
