SAU Indoor Track & Field To Compete In Finn Pincus Invitational This Weekend (Jan. 24-25)

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 23) – Track & Field powerhouse Saint Augustine's University (SAU) will be among 27 schools competing in the Finn Pincus Invitational in Salem, Va., this weekend. The indoor meet begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Kerr-Cregger Fieldhouse.

Though the season is just starting, several Falcons and Lady Falcons have already established themselves as national contenders in their respective events. Newcomers Phillip Marcelle (So./Greenville, Grenada) and Kurt Modeste (So./Greenville, Grenada) have exploded on the scene for the SAU men, having posted national Division II times in the Carolina Opener last weekend.

Marcelle, named CIAA Indoor Men's Track Athlete Of The Week, is ranked sixth nationally in the 200 dash (21.49) and fifth in the 400 dash (47.84). Modeste ranks seventh in the 200 dash (21.55) and Jalen Jones (So./Raeford, NC) ranks fourth in the 400 dash (47.59).

The trio, along with Brandon Parris (Sr./Sion Hill, St. Vincent), ran the nation's top Division II time (3:09.17) this season in winning the 4x400 relay at the Gamecock Opener, beating numerous Division I teams including the University of South Carolina, which hosted the meet, and the University of Florida. Both South Carolina and Florida are members of the SEC, known for having strong track and field teams.

On the women's side, Shannon Kalawan (Sr./Westmoreland, Jamaica) is off to a flying start with a No. 7 ranking in the 400 dash (55.71). She is the two-time defending Division II indoor national champion in the event. This week, Kalawan was selected CIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Kalawan also anchors the fourth-ranked 4x400 relay squad, which includes Jaria Hoyte (So./St. Phillip, Barbados), Danielle Scantlebury (So./St. George, Barbados) and Davia Smith (Sr./Manchester, Jamaica). The relay team recorded a time of 3:49.06 at the Gamecock Opener.

The Falcons and Lady Falcons have combined for 39 NCAA Division II national titles during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Legendary Head Coach George Williams leads all active coaches in national championships, regardless of division and sport. He has the third-most national crowns in NCAA history.
