Williams, Defense Spark SAU Men's Basketball Past ECSU 63-44

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 20) – Hirk Williams (Sr./Manassas, VA) scored a career-high 20 points and Saint Augustine's University (SAU) limited Elizabeth City State University to 30.2 percent shooting in a 63-44 men's basketball victory at the Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The contest was designated as a non-conference matchup between both CIAA teams.

The victory was the second straight for the Falcons, who have won three of their last four games. They have won two consecutive games for the third time this season.


Williams was 9 of 12 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from three-point range. He pulled down seven rebounds.


Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) added 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 6 from three-point land. Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) tallied a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, and Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) had eight points and two steals for the Falcons, who shot 45.1 percent.


SAU held Elizabeth City State (12-15 overall) to the lowest point total by an opponent this season. The Vikings' shooting percentage is the second-lowest this season against the Falcons.


The Vikings shot 26.7 percent in the second half as the Falcons opened a double-digit lead. Williams scored every point during a 10-2 run, including two consecutive threes, to push SAU ahead 35-22.

ECSU got within seven and trailed by nine (46-37) with six minutes left before the Falcons went on a game-ending run. A 17-7 spurt, led by six points from Jefferson on two treys, put the Vikings away for good.

The Falcons (11-16 overall) never trailed after jumping out to an 11-2 lead on a Williams' jumper. Williams scored eight points and Gaddy added seven points in the first half for the Falcons, who led 25-18 at halftime. The 18 first-half points were the lowest by a Falcons' opponent this season.


Gabe Kirkendoll scored 12 points for the Vikings. Joseph Allen added nine points and 12 rebounds.


The Falcons conclude the regular season with their fourth road game in a row on Saturday, Feb. 22, against Fayetteville State University. Tipoff is 4 p.m. at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.
