SAU Volleyball Optimistic Despite Losses At WVSU Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 17) – Last week, Saint Augustine's University lost to West Virginia State in three sets at the SAU Volleyball Invitational.

On Friday, SAU fell to West Virginia State in three sets at the WVSU Invitational. Kris Kern, the West Virginia State Head Coach, noticed a difference in both outcomes, however.

"The West Virginia State coach was impressed by how much we grew together as a team in two weeks," SAU Head Coach Tacara Moxey said. "He came over to praise them."

The WVSU Invitational was the Lady Falcons' final tune-up before CIAA conference play begins next week. Despite losing to WVSU and Indiana, Pa., in three sets, Moxey remains optimistic. The Lady Falcons also scrimmaged the West Virginia State "B" team, which did not count on their win-loss record.

"I liked the way we competed," Moxey said. "If we bring the same game and competitiveness against Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday, it will be a great match."

The Lady Falcons started slowly against Indiana, Pa., (6-4 overall) in the morning match before picking up steam in the third set. Tionna Graham (Jr./Portmore, Jamaica) led SAU with eight kills and Sydney Moore (Jr./West Bloomfield, MI) added five assists and six digs in the 25-9, 25-11, 25-18 defeat. Zakiya Freeman (Fr./Riverdale, GA) had six assists and Janina Mayers (Sr./Christ Church, Barbados) tallied seven digs.

The result was similar against West Virginia State (9-2 overall), but the Lady Falcons brought more effort in the rematch, especially in the second set of a 25-10, 25-21, 25-10 loss.

Madison Jones (Fr./Durham, NC) recorded five kills and Moore finished with eight assists for the Lady Falcons (0-5 overall). Maegan Williams (Fr./Durham, NC) totaled 12 digs followed by Mayers with 11 digs.

Moxey says their early non-conference schedule will prepare the Lady Falcons for conference play, which starts against Johnson C. Smith at home inside Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Match time is 6 p.m.

West Virginia State is favored to win the South Division in the Mountain East Conference, and Indiana, Pa., is picked to finish fifth in the Western Division of the competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

"We played against great competition which should help us in the CIAA," Moxey said.
