SAU Men's Basketball Gets Road Win Over Claflin

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 1) - Jaylen Richard (Jr./Durham, NC) poured in 20 points as Saint Augustine's University throttled Claflin 67-61 in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C., on Monday, Jan. 31.

Richard was one point off his season-high of 21 points versus Johnson & Wales in December 2021. He was nearly perfect against Claflin, connecting on 8 of 10 shots from the floor and 4 of 5 attempts from the charity stripe. Richard was all over the floor defensively, collecting three of the Falcons' 10 steals.

Richard had plenty of offensive help. CIAA scoring leader Dhashon Dyson (So./Chicago, IL) and Sean Tony Hauser (Jr./Charlotte, NC) each scored 12 points and Josh Page (Sr./Washington, DC) added 11 points and two steals. Hauser pulled down nine rebounds.

Kyshon Tate (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Daveon Dunn (So./Raleigh, NC) both chipped in six points and Dunn tallied three steals.

Their offensive balance was enough to upend Claflin, who was led by Allen Hatchett with 16 points. Only one other Panther scored in double figures.

The Falcons shot 57 percent in the first half to open a 38-26 halftime lead. They led the entire second half but had to withstand a late Claflin run.

The Panthers rallied from a 13-point deficit to pull even twice, the last time at 59-all with under four minutes left. The Falcons took charge down the stretch, however, with several Falcons contributing to the run.

Page's layup on an assist from Richard and Hauser's tip-in gave the Falcons a 63-59 lead. Hauser scored on another tip-in for a six-point lead around the one-minute mark.

Claflin sliced the margin to four at 65-61, but Dunn's two free throws with 32 seconds left sealed the win.

The Falcons upped their record to 1-4 in the Southern Division, 2-8 in the CIAA and 4-16 overall. The Panthers fell to 1-4 in the Southern Division, 3-8 in the CIAA and 4-16 overall.

The Falcons return to Raleigh to visit crosstown rival Shaw at Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m.
