RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 10) - Yasmine Thompson's first home run of the season was a memorable one.
Thompson (Sr./Charlotte, NC) smacked a grand slam during the Saint Augustine's University-Benedict softball doubleheader played Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Tiger Field in Columbia, S.C.
The Lady Falcons fell 21-1 in the first game and 15-8 in the second game.
The grand slam happened in the second game. Thompson drove in four runs, including herself, over the left center field fence to give the Lady Falcons a 4-0 lead in the first inning. She was 3 of 4 at the plate with four runs batted in (RBIs) and one run scored.
Victoria Spoon (Jr./Holland Patent, NY) and Victoria De La Cruz (Jr./Whittier, CA) also homered in the second game for the Lady Falcons. Both home runs were in the fifth inning. Spoon smacked a solo homer over the center field fence and De La Cruz hit a two-run blast past center field.
SU and Benedict each tallied eight hits in the second game. Spoon was 3 of 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Shaquelle Bain (Sr./Nassau, Bahamas) and Rashonda Hart (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) each scored two runs, and Gia Minnis (Grad./Nassau, Bahamas) collected two stolen bases.
In the first game, Bain drove in SAU's only run on a sacrifice fly. Madison Poston (So./Florence, SC) had the Lady Falcons' only hit on a double while Benedict totaled 13 hits.
The Lady Falcons are 0-4 overall and Benedict is 3-1 overall. SAU is back in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, Feb. 12, to play Allen. Game times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
