SAU Men's Basketball Falls To WSSU In CIAA Tourney Quarterfinals

BALTIMORE (Feb. 24) – Saint Augustine's University gave a great effort, but eventually succumbed to the hot shooting of Winston-Salem State in an 86-57 men's basketball quarterfinal loss in the CIAA Tournament at Royal Farms Arena on Thursday.

Josh Page (Sr./Washington, DC) scored 14 points and Dhashon Dyson (So./Chicago, IL) added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Falcons, who were making their first quarterfinal appearance since 2016. The No. 11 seed Falcons were coming off a three-point first-round victory over crosstown rival Shaw on Wednesday.

SAU fell behind quickly against No. 3 seed Winston-Salem State but stayed in striking distance, trailing 37-26 at halftime. The Rams (19-6 overall). pulled away in the second half behind the torrid three-point shooting of Javonte Cooke, who scored a game-high 31 points. He swished four of his seven treys in the second half as the Rams increased their lead.

The Rams shot 61.7 percent from the floor, including 66.7 percent (12 of 18) behind the three-point line. Th Falcons shot 40.7 percent overall and 46.7 percent (7 of 15) behind the arc.

Christopher Hill (Jr./Charlotte, NC) and Todd Smith (Sr./Burlington, NC) each scored nine points for the Falcons. Sean Tony Hauser (Jr./Charlotte, NC) finished with seven points and Moses Mupungo (Jr./Congo, Africa) chipped in six points.

The Falcons ended their season at 7-21 overall. The Rams face No. 2 seed Virginia Union in Friday's semifinals.
