WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 5) - Saint Augustine's University showed plenty of grit in a 65-56 CIAA men's basketball overtime loss to Winston-Salem State at the Gaines Center on Saturday.
The Falcons battled the defending CIAA champions toe-to-toe in a defensive contest, forcing extra minutes after time expired in regulation.
Overtime was a different story, however, as the Falcons were outscored 12-3.
SAU would not have made it to overtime if not for Jaylen Richard (Jr./Durham, NC), who scored 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting. He scored the Falcons last seven points in the final two minutes of regulation, including a basket with 11 seconds left to tie the game 53-53 to force overtime.
Sean Tony Hauser (Jr./Charlotte, NC) added 12 points and Dhashon Dyson (So./Chicago) scored 10 for the Falcons (1-6 Southern Division, 2-11 CIAA, 4-19 overall). Kyshon Tate (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Daveon Dunn (So./Raleigh, NC) each snatched nine rebounds as the Falcons outscored the Rams 11-8 in second chance points.
Their prowess on the offensive glass and sticky defense kept the Falcons in the game. The Rams shot 32 percent and the Falcons made 46 percent of their shots in the second half.
The Rams (5-1 Southern Division, 9-3 CIAA, 15-5 overall) heated up in overtime as they shot 67 percent from the floor and 73 percent (8 of 11) from the free throw line. The Falcons connected on 20 percent of their shots and 50 percent from the charity stripe.
Cameron Campbell scored 21 points and Javonte Cooke added 20 for the Rams, who scored 19 points off 18 SAU turnovers.
The Falcons will play their fifth straight away game on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, N.C. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
