WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 22) – Saint Augustine's University fell to Winston-Salem State 9-5 and 11-6 in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Twin City Park on Friday.
In game one, the Lady Falcons built a 5-1 lead through the top of the third inning. Victoria Spoon (So./Holland Patent, NY) smacked an RBI triple and Madison Poston (So./Florence, SC) recorded an RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After the Rams scored in the second inning, the Lady Falcons scored three runs in the third inning when Rashonda Hart (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) hit an RBI double and Gia Minnis (Graduate/Nassau, Bahamas) hit a two-run single.
The Rams came back to tie the score 5-5 by the fourth inning and scored four runs in the remaining two innings for the win.
Spoon was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, one RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who collected 11 hits. Hart was 2-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and a double.
Alleshia Pullen was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored, two home runs and a double for the Rams, who had 17 hits.
In game two, the Lady Falcons never recovered from a 7-0 deficit in the first inning, though they tried. Deanta' Colebrooke (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) hit an RBI single and scored on an error to pull the Lady Falcons within 7-2 in the second inning.
The Rams (9-3 CIAA, 12-8 overall) stretched their lead to 9-2 on Pullen's two-run homer in the third inning, but the Lady Falcons crawled within 9-5 in the fourth inning. Latavia Braynen (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) had an RBI single, Richara Bain (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) scored on an error and Hart hit an RBI single.
The Lady Falcons got no closer as the Rams pulled away in the latter innings. Victoria De La Cruz (So./Whittier, CA) had an RBI for the final SAU run.
Hart was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Colebrooke was 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who had six hits. Pullen was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run for the Rams, who tallied 12 hits.
The Lady Falcons (3-11 CIAA, 3-21 overall) are back in action Saturday, April 23, in a road doubleheader against Fayetteville State to conclude the regular season. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
