Falcons lose heartbreaker to Rams on late TD

WINSTON-SALEM, NC --Winston-Salem mounted a five-play, 55-yard drive, culminating in a one-yard rushing touchdown from with :11 left in the ballgame, as Saint Augustine's lost 24-17 in heartbreaking fashion to the Rams on Saturday afternoon at Bowman-Gray.

The Rams improved to 4-4 on the year and 4-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, while the Falcons fell to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in conference matchups.

Avonte George led all Falcons rushers with 53 yards in the contest, picking up 5.3 yards per carry. Marquis Munoz also added 47 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Deandre Proctor reeled in two catches for 15 yards.

Ty'quereon Hines showed out for the Saint Augustine's defense, totaling one interception which he returned for a touchdown. Kennedy Nelson added three tackles and one recovered fumble and Lee Sales had six tackles and one interception in the loss.

The Falcons won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with Saint Augustine's turning those takeaways into 10 points.

Saint Augustine's' defense was tough against the run, limiting Winston-Salem to just 93 yards on the ground. Saint Augustine's out-rushed Winston-Salem by 36 yards. The Falcons pestered the Winston-Salem passing attack all game long, registering four sacks and adding two interceptions.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's took a 7-0 lead over Winston-Salem after scoring the game's first points with 2:59 left in the second quarter.Winston-Salem then tied things up at 7-7 before the Falcons responded with an 80-yard pick six from Hines to retake the lead at 14-7.

Saint Augustine's kept Winston-Salem off the scoreboard and increased its lead to 17-7 with 9:04 remaining in the third quarter. Saint Augustine's didn't score again in the game and Winston-Salem added 17 more points to finish off the scoring.
