Winston-Salem, NC -- The SAU Men's and Women's track and field teams showcased their talents in front of the entire CIAA at this weekend's championship. The Men's team missed out on a first-place finish after freshman sprinter,
Terrell Robinson pulled up with an injury in the 200m final. Robinson, who was recently named CIAA Men's Track Athlete of the Year, placed first in the 60m with a time of 6.77, and after having the top time in the 200m preliminaries (21.91), barring injury, likely would have placed the Falcons atop of the points leaderboard. Freshman
Ha'Mir Hampton was the other first place finisher for the Falcons in the 400m. His time of 49.01 outlasted the competition.
Head Coach Bershawn "Batman" Jackson Statement
"I am extremely proud of my guys. For us, it's a victory. From where we started and where we are now, it's been an amazing journey. With all of the injuries and still only five points short from winning the CIAA title -- I couldn't be more prouder with my boys' performances. They represented SAU well."
As for the Women's team,
Malaysia Johnson placed second in the 200m finals with a time of 25.33. Freshman
Christabelle Obi placed third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.11.
Head Coach Elizabeth Gary Statement
"To take fourth with only 14 ladies and be within three points of third place was awesome. The teams that beat us all carried at least 25 to 30 athletes. The fact that we were that close, you couldn't ask for more than that. I thought they had a lot of heart; I was really impressed with the fight. You could see it. I was really impressed with that. Christabelle (Obi) fell down in the 800 Pentathlon, and she got right up. That was huge. What she did was just a freak of nature. She PR'd (personal record) in the hurdles, and what she did was unthinkable. Shaunece Miller stepped up in a huge way, Camille Talbert, Malaysia Johnson -- all stepped up in a huge way. I know they wanted a plaque, but I couldn't have asked for any more than what they gave. They made the university look good. I think it brought back a sense of pride."
