Saint Augustine's rallies late, but loses to Winston-Salem 69-64

CE GAINES CENTER, Winston --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team took a 48-47 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 69-64 to the Winston-Salem Rams on the road Thursday.

The Falcons (9-7, 3-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Banks added 11 points and Janiya Reed chipped in as well with 11 points and four steals.

Greene pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Saint Augustine's, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 21 second chance points.

Saint Augustine's forced 23 Winston-Salem turnovers. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Reed's four steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Saint Augustine's then started off the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Greene, to take a 17-16 lead. The Rams then came roaring back to take a 30-26 lead heading into halftime.

Winston-Salem continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-29 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 15-0 run to grab a 44-42 lead with 2:03 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Rams had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-47 edge. Saint Augustine's took advantage of five Winston-Salem turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of takeaways.

Winston-Salem proceeded to take a 60-55 lead before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Banks' three, to even the score at 60 all with 1:13 to go in the contest. The Falcons could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Rams outscored them 9-4 the rest of the way to hand Saint Augustine's the 69-64 loss. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
