Banks and Greene record double-doubles in Saint Augustine's 64-60 loss to Elizabeth City State

BALTIMORE, MD --Lauren Banks and Taniyah Greene each recorded double-doubles, but the Saint Augustine's women's basketball team fell to the Elizabeth City State Vikings 64-60 at CFG Bank Arena Wednesday.

The Falcons (15-13) had three players score in double figures, led by Janiya Reed, who had 16 points and two steals. Banks added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Greene chipped in as well with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Banks pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Saint Augustine's, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

Saint Augustine's forced 17 Elizabeth City State turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Reed's two steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-3, Saint Augustine's went on a 9-0 run with 6:32 left in the first quarter to take a 12-5 lead. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Saint Augustine's capitalized on three Elizabeth City State turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

Elizabeth City State rallied to take a 25-24 lead before Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run starting at the 46 seconds mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Christionna Faison, to take a 31-25 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Saint Augustine's dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Elizabeth City State then took a 48-35 lead following intermission before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Faison, to trim its deficit to 48-41 with 21 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Saint Augustine's took advantage of five Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Elizabeth City State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-53 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 61-60 with 22 seconds to go in the contest. Elizabeth City State responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-60. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
