Ray Martin is in his third season as assistant men's basketball coach at Saint Augustine's University. He works with the post players and helps with recruiting.
  Martin is a veteran coach who is well-respected in the country. His college coaching career has spanned over five decades including eight seasons (1980-88) as an assistant under head coach Jim Valvano at North Carolina State University.
The Wolfpack won an NCAA national title (1983), two ACC championships (1983, 1987) and made six NCAA tournament appearances during Martin's tenure.
Before joining the SAU basketball staff, Martin was the assistant basketball coach and director of basketball operations at North Carolina A&T State University from 2016 to 2018.
A Long Island City, Queens, N.Y., native, Martin was head men's basketball coach at Long Island University from 1998 to 2001 and served as assistant coach to John Thompson, then the Georgetown University head coach, during the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. He has recruited and coached several former NBA players including Spud Webb, Vinny Del Negro, Allan Houston, Wally Szczerbiak, Nate McMillan, Thurl Bailey, Sidney Lowe and Tom Gugliotta.
Martin is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and one of the founding fathers of the Black Coaches Association (BCA). On May 5, 2017, Martin was inducted into the Basketball Old-Timers of America Hall of Fame in New York City.Â
During his collegiate days, Martin played basketball for four years under head coach Digger Phelps at Notre Dame where he was team captain. Martin was a member of the Fighting Irish team that ended UCLA's 88-game winning streak on Jan. 19, 1974. He earned an economics degree from Notre Dame in 1977.
