St. Aug Bowlers Finish Second at CIAA Southern Division Meet II

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Saint Augustine's University women's bowling team turned in a strong performance at the second CIAA Southern Division Meet over the weekend.
 
The Lady Falcons returned from nearly a two-month break to place second among the six Southern Division schools at the meet. They knocked down 11,259 total pins to finish ahead of third-place Winston-Salem State University and behind winner Fayetteville State University. Winston-Salem State had 10,373 pins and Fayetteville State amassed 11,799 pins. Shaw was fourth with 9,608 pins, Johnson C. Smith was fifth with 8,145 pins and Livingstone finished sixth with 8,336 pins.
 
The Lady Falcons sparkled on the last day (Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013) of the meet, posting a perfect 5-0 mark in Baker matches. They defeated CIAA defending champion Fayetteville State 714-646, Winston-Salem State 737-663, Shaw 580-497, Livingstone 616-538 and Johnson C. Smith 694-427.
 
“The team did well,” St. Aug Head Coach Dot Neal said. “It was a total team effort. To go 5-0 in Bakers, that is good. We stepped up.”
 
The Lady Falcons were 12-3 in the three-day event including a 7-3 record in team matches.  Their victims on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, were Shaw (815-653), Winston-Salem State (802-800), Johnson C. Smith (800-581) and Livingstone (657-561). Their only loss was to Fayetteville State (758-887).
 
On Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, the Lady Falcons defeated Johnson C. Smith (872-608), Livingstone (782-595) and Shaw (866-761). They were defeated in two close matches by Winston-Salem State (764-769) and Fayetteville State (802-885).
 
The Lady Falcons were led by Nicole Sciortino (So./Raleigh, N.C.) but it was a team effort. Sciortino rolled a 181.90 average, which was fifth highest among Northern and Southern Division bowlers. The Northern and Southern Division meets are held at the same site this season. She bowled scores of 201 and 205, respectively, against Livingstone and Shaw. JaNia Jones (Jr./Fayetteville, N.C.) bowled a 161.70 average including a 211 score against Johnson C. Smith. Her average was among the top 20 in the meet.
 
Najah Watson (Jr./Newark, N.J.) rolled a 156.10 average and Bethany Daniels (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) bowled a 155.8 average including a 203 score against Johnson C. Smith and a 214 score against Shaw. Hunter Cannon (Fr./Rocky Mount, N.C.) averaged a 136.2 score, but she topped the 200-score mark against Fayetteville State with a 202. In all, St. Aug bowlers rolled six 200 games in team matches.
 
The Lady Falcons will take this weekend off before competing in the CIAA Round-Up the following weekend. The meet will be held Feb. 8-10 in Nags Head, N.C.
