SAU Men's Basketball Trounces Mount Olive In Home Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 20) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) took charge from the opening tip and ran away with an 88-74 men's basketball victory over the University of Mount Olive in packed Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday.

The Falcons started fast out the gate, racing to a 10-0 lead on their way to an easy win. They handed the Trojans their second loss in five games while improving to 2-1 overall.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) spearheaded the win for the Falcons, scoring a season-high 32 points in only his third game in an SAU uniform. He connected on 12 of 16 shot attempts including 5 of 6 three-pointers. As a team, the Falcons made 10 of 16 treys for 62.5 percent.

Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) added 20 points and Rashad George (R-Jr./Raleigh, NC) chipped in 13 points for SAU. Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) registered nine points for the Falcons, who shot 57.4 percent from the floor.

The SAU men shot a blistering 65.5 percent from the floor in opening a 53-28 halftime lead. The margin reached 29 points midway in the second half before a late run by the Trojans made the score somewhat respectable.

The Falcons were just as impressive defensively, holding the Trojans to 37.5 percent shooting, including 22.8 percent in the first half. The Trojans, led by 17 points each from Alan Treakle and Darius Spragley, got hot in the second half, shooting 61.9 percent but the Falcons' double-digit lead was insurmountable.

SAU will take a Thanksgiving break before resuming play on Dec. 5 against CIAA foe Bowie State University in Raleigh, N.C. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
