RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 14) – Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) scored 22 points for Saint Augustine's University in an 85-75 CIAA men's basketball loss to Elizabeth City State University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.
Jefferson, who was 4 of 7 from three-point land, led four Falcons in double figures. Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) added 15 points and Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) pumped in 11 points. Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) posted 10 points and nine rebounds and Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) had eight points for the Falcons, who outscored the Vikings 33-11 in bench points and 30-20 in points in the paint.
Jefferson scored 11 points to lead the Falcons to a 19-11 lead midway in the first half. The score was tied 28-28 at halftime and the Falcons were outscored 57-47 in the second half.
The Falcons (0-1 CIAA, 2-5 overall) trailed by 11 with seven minutes left in the second half but closed within 67-65 on two Clemonts' free throws with 2:19 left. SAU missed a jumper that would have tied the game, and the Vikings (1-1 CIAA, 7-4 overall) opened some breathing room down the stretch.
Zaccheus Hobbs of ECSU led all scorers with 33 points. Justin Faison and Rashard Zimmerman each added 14 points for the Vikings, who shot 56 percent in the second half.
The Falcons hit the court again Monday, Dec. 16, against Virginia State University in a conference tilt. Tipoff is 6 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
