SAU Men's Basketball Falls To Virginia State At Home

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 17) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) made a late run before falling 71-59 to Virginia State University in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Monday.

The Falcons trailed by 17 points in the second half but cut the margin to 56-51 with 5:44 remaining on a layup by Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC), who led SAU with 11 points. The Trojans pushed their lead to 70-55, however, with 1:18 left to play.

Rashad George (Jr./Raleigh, NC) added 10 points and Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) chipped in nine points for the Falcons, who made 7 of 20 three-pointers. The Falcons outscored the Trojans 32-16 in bench points and forced 18 turnovers.

Antwan Miles led the Trojans (4-0 CIAA, 8-4 overall) with 20 points. Walter Williams added 14 points for VSU, which made 23 of 25 free throw attempts compared to 8 of 13 for the Falcons.

Gaddy scored all nine of his points in the first half and Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) added seven points as the Falcons overcame an early 14-3 deficit against the Trojans, the defending CIAA champions. The Falcons tied the game twice, the last time at 27-27 on a basket by Vernon McWhite (Fr./Fayetteville, NC), but the Trojans finished the half on a 10-2 run for a 37-29 halftime lead.

The Falcons (0-2 CIAA, 2-6) travel to Orangeburg, S.C., for a Southern Division road contest against Claflin University on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
