SAU Women's Basketball Rallies Past Claflin 63-61

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 18) – Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD) tallied 18 points, five steals and five assists and Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) added 13 points for Saint Augustine's University (SAU) in a 63-61 come-from-behind women's basketball victory over Claflin University at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C., on Wednesday.

Renwicks set season highs in points and steals and tied a season high in assists against Claflin. Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Lady Falcons, who won their CIAA Southern Division season opener. Quiera Gilmore (Sr./Charlotte, NC) chipped in nine points.


Attacking relentlessly, Renwicks was 4 of 8 from the floor and 10 of 10 from the free throw line, including 6 of 6 in the fourth period to spark a Lady Falcons' comeback. Relying on pressure defense, SAU rallied from an 11-point deficit (57-46) in the final 6:57 for the victory.


Renwicks scored 10 points in the fourth period, including a layup with 2:11 remaining to tie the score at 61-61. Eason added a layup with 41 seconds left for the eventual game-winning bucket. Her basket gave the Lady Falcons their only lead of the second half.


The Lady Falcons (1-0 Southern Division, 1-2 CIAA, 5-5 overall) held the Lady Panthers without a field goal in the final 4:26 during their 17-4 comeback run. They outscored Claflin 19-10 in the fourth period with Clark scoring seven points.


SAU, ranked fifth in the country in forcing turnovers, made Claflin cough up the ball 29 times, including 10 times in the fourth period.


As a team, the Lady Falcons shot 44.7 percent and connected on 19 of 28 free throw attempts for 67.9 percent. The Lady Panthers (0-2 Southern Division, 0-4 CIAA, 0-10 overall) shot 36.4 percent and were 15 of 24 from the charity stripe for 62.5 percent.


Dashia Jackson scored 18 points for the Lady Panthers, who led much of the game. Dionna Long added 10 points.


The Lady Falcons play their final game before the holiday break on Saturday, Dec. 21, against Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at the Gaines Center.
