SAU Men's Basketball Hangs Tough Before Falling To WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Dec. 21) – Saint Augustine's University stayed close with Winston-Salem State University before falling 66-59 in a CIAA men's basketball game at the Gaines Center on Saturday.

Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC), who scored 17 points on 4 of 8 three-point shooting, made two free throws to pull the Falcons within 58-57 with 2:18 remaining in the game. From that point, the Falcons were outscored 8-2 down the stretch.


Hirk Williams (Sr./Manassas, VA) added 10 points and Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) registered eight points and eight rebounds for the Falcons. Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) scored six points and Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) had six assists.


The Falcons went into halftime leading 32-27 after a steal and three-pointer by Williams as time expired. They opened their biggest lead at 35-28 early in the second half on Gaddy's three-pointer.


The Rams went on a run to lead by five but the Falcons clawed back. The score was tied twice and the Falcons closed within one late before the Rams' final run.


Jaylen Alston scored 15 points for the Rams (1-1 Southern Division, 3-2 CIAA, 5-5 overall). Robert Colon and Jonathan Hicklin each added 10 points.


The Falcons (0-2 Southern Division, 0-4 CIAA, 2-8 overall) will take a holiday break before returning to the court in 2020. They host Glenville State College in a non-conference game at Emery Gymnasium on Jan. 3. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
