Big Second Half Lifts SAU Men's Basketball Past Regionally-Ranked Glenville State 103-82

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 3) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) turned the tables on regionally-ranked Glenville State College Friday night.

The Pioneers average nearly 103 points on the basketball court, but the Falcons were the team to reach the century mark in a 103-82 men's non-conference victory at Emery Gymnasium. The SAU men scored in triple digits for the first time since 2014, when they defeated College of Faith 110-59 at home.

The Falcons won by outscoring Glenville State 58-38 in the second half to break open a close game. Leading 45-44 at the half, SAU jumped out to a 16-point lead only to watch the Pioneers whittle the margin to two points in a two-minute span.

SAU responded with a game-clinching 30-11 run in the final eight minutes to bury the Pioneers, who dropped to 8-4 overall. The Falcons improved to 3-8 overall with the satisfying win.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) had the hot hand for SAU, scoring a game-high 25 points on 9 of 10 shooting including 6 of 6 from three-point land. Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) added 19 points and Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) collected 18 points for the Falcons, who were 20 of 27 from the floor for a scorching 74.1 percent in the second half. Their 61.4 percent shooting overall was a season-high and their 61.9 percent shooting from behind the three-point arc (13 of 21) was their second-highest this season.

Both Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) and Nilous Hodge (So./Charlotte, NC) added nine points and Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) had seven points for SAU, who repeatedly broke the Pioneers' full-court press for open shots and layups.

Phil Bledsoe led Glenville State, ranked sixth in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll, with 17 points, which was eight points below his average. Noah Frampton scored 13 points and the trio of Hegel Augustin, Steven Verplancken and Najee Scott each finished with 11 points. The Pioneers, ranked third nationally in Division II in scoring, shot 44.4 percent but only 39.4 percent behind the three-point arc (13 of 33).

The contest was the final non-conference tune-up for the Falcons before facing CIAA teams the rest of the schedule. They host Virginia Union University in a non-conference game between CIAA foes on Monday, Jan. 6. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
