Valiant Comeback Falls Short In SAU Men's Basketball Loss To Livingstone

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 14) – Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) scored 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds, both season highs, as Saint Augustine's University (SAU) rallied late from a double-digit deficit but fell 90-86 to Livingstone College in a CIAA Southern Division men's basketball game at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Jan. 13.

The Falcons trailed by 15 points with seven minutes left, including 12 points with 2:18 remaining, but Clemonts' three-point play tied the game at 84-84 with 44.3 seconds left. The Blue Bears finished with a 6-2 run to preserve the win.

Clemonts scored 20 points in the last seven minutes, including the final 10 points for the Falcons.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) added 11 points and Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) tallied nine points for the Falcons, who entered the contest on a three-game winning streak. The scrappy Falcons outrebounded the taller Blue Bears 15-3 on the offensive boards, which led to a 14-4 edge in second chance points. SAU shot 41.7 percent for the game.

SAU took charge in the first half after falling behind early. Trailing by five points, the Falcons went on a 17-2 run capped by a layup by Vernon McWhite (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) for a 28-18 lead. They entered halftime leading 35-30.

The Falcons (0-5 CIAA, 5-9 overall) stretched their lead to nine in the second half before the Blue Bears regrouped behind Ray, who scored 31 of his game-high 37 points in the final stanza. He sparked the Blue Bears (4-3 CIAA, 9-7 overall) to a double-digit lead before the Falcons made it interesting in the end.

Ray added nine rebounds and six assists for the Blue Bears, who shot 76.9 percent in the second half and 66 percent for the game. Lydell Elmore chipped in 14 points and Cameron Carpenter collected 10 points.
