SAU Men's Basketball Falls Late To Regionally-Ranked Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. (Jan. 16) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) was searching for its second men's basketball victory against a regionally-ranked opponent this month.

And for a while, it appeared the Falcons would accomplish the task. But a late run by Virginia State University dashed their hopes in a 76-66 non-conference loss at the VSU Multipurpose Center on Monday, Jan. 15.

The last time the Falcons played a regionally-ranked team, they handled Glenville State College at home 103-82 on Jan. 3. Glenville State was ranked sixth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll at the time.

On Wednesday, SAU was more than holding its own against the Trojans, ranked 10th in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll. The Falcons led 29-25 at the half and were ahead by seven early in the second half on three free throws by Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC), who was fouled on a three-point attempt.

The Trojans (12-5 overall), the defending CIAA champions, quickly surged ahead by seven, but the Falcons found themselves leading again 50-48 with 8:28 remaining on two free throws by Nilous Hodge (So./Charlotte, NC). The Trojans then seized control with a game-ending 28-16 run.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) had a big offensive night for the Falcons (5-10 overall). He scored a game-high 23 points, including 17 in the second half. He connected on six of SAU's 11 field goals in the second half. Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) chipped in 11 points and Geordan Walker (Jr./Durham, NC) finished with 10 points.

Jefferson, the Falcons' leading scorer, started slowly in the first half, scoring six points, but Walker picked up the slack. He scored nine first-half points to give the Falcons momentum, which led to a four-point halftime lead.

Walter Williams scored 18 points and Francis Fitzgerald added 16 for the Trojans, who outscored the Falcons 51-37 in the second half. Antwan Miles also scored in double figures with 14 points.

The Falcons will be back on the court Monday, Jan. 20, in a CIAA away game against Bowie State University. The contest will be played in Bowie, Md., at 7:30 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
