Defense Lifts SAU Women's Basketball Past Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. (Jan. 16) – Saint Augustine's University locked in on defense and never let up in a 54-48 women's basketball victory over CIAA opponent Virginia State University at the VSU Multipurpose Center on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

The Lady Falcons limited the Trojans to 29.6 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers in the win. The point total is a season-low for a Lady Falcons' opponent and the shooting percentage is the second-lowest by an SAU opponent this season. It also happens to be the second-lowest point total and shooting percentage for the Trojans this season.

Though the contest counted as a non-conference game, the victory was big for the Lady Falcons, who defeated a perennial CIAA contender. Not only did SAU gain revenge from an earlier home loss to the Trojans in December 2019, but the Lady Falcons (6-9 overall) have already doubled their win total from last season.

SAU garnered its first win at Virginia State in its last three trips behind a vice-like defense led by Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD), Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA). Renwicks recorded six rebounds and three steals to go along with a game-high 13 points and four assists. Caraballo added three steals and Clark had 10 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who held the Trojans to 14.3 percent shooting in the first period to open a 16-8 lead at the end of the period. The Trojans (8-10 overall) couldn't solve the Lady Falcons' defense as the margin stretched to 16 at halftime (32-16).

The Lady Falcons were also cold from the floor (25.9 percent for the game), but Renwicks, Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) and Clark provided points at the free throw line when the Trojans made their late run. Renwicks, a 75 percent free throw shooter, knocked down 11 of 16 free throws for the game while Williams made a perfect 6 of 6 and Clark 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Lady Falcons made 24 of 32 free throws for 75 percent while the Trojans were 15 of 27 for 55.6 percent.

Even with the free throws, the Lady Falcons needed clutch plays down the stretch and they got it from Williams and Clark. With the Trojans rallying late, Williams scored on a driving layup for a 49-41 lead with under two minutes left. Another layup – this time by Clark – put the Lady Falcons ahead by nine later in the game.

The Trojans managed to get within five, but Renwicks sealed the win with two free throws for a seven-point SAU lead in the closing seconds.

Caraballo contributed 10 points for the Lady Falcons. Clark added nine points and Williams scored eight points.

Autumn Hopson and Natalia Leaks both scored 10 points for the Trojans, who succumbed to the Lady Falcons' defensive pressure and half-court defense.

The Lady Falcons take a short break before resuming play on Monday, Jan. 20 at Bowie State University on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. in Bowie, Md.
